Building a data centre is one of the hardest coordination problems in EPC. Civil, electrical, HVAC, fire suppression, structured cabling, BMS, racks, security — each discipline has its own vendors, its own standards, its own way of finger-pointing when something goes wrong. Twelve failure modes.

A data centre is a bet on uptime. Every watt of power, every BTU of cooling, every metre of cable, every UPS battery, every fire panel — each is a potential failure point, and the client doesn't care which one caused the outage. They just know the system is down.

Coal India's subsidiaries needed purpose-built data centres to host their ICCC infrastructure — the nerve-centre for surveillance, AI analytics and mine-operations telemetry. The ask was direct: own all of it, deliver Tier-III-level reliability, and give us one throat to choke when something goes wrong.

What SMIPL designed

A Tier-III-aligned data centre is, at its core, a system of redundancies. Concurrently-maintainable power paths, redundant cooling, N+1 UPS capacity, isolated fire zones, structured cabling that a technician can trace in the dark. We designed each element independently, then stress-tested their interactions through design review.

Electrical backbone

Dual-source power with automatic transfer switching. SMIPL-fabricated LT panels with selective coordination. Redundant UPS sized for concurrent-maintenance load, with SMF battery banks providing ride-through. ESE lightning protection and chemical earthing to IEEE standards.

Precision cooling (CRAC)

Precision Computer Room Air Conditioning with hot-aisle/cold-aisle containment. Redundant units sized so any single unit can fail or be taken offline for maintenance without impacting room conditions. Chilled-water or DX options depending on site topology — we've deployed both.

Structured cabling

Cat-6A and fibre backbones laid to EIA/TIA standards. Colour-coded by function. Fully documented with as-built diagrams. The goal: any competent technician can walk into the server room five years later, open the cabling guide, and trace any circuit end-to-end in minutes.

BMS & monitoring

A Building Management System that unifies power, cooling, fire, access control and environmental sensors into a single dashboard. Temperature, humidity, water-leak detection, door status, UPS load — all feeding a central console with configurable alerting.

Why single-vendor EPC matters

The data-centre industry likes to pretend that multi-vendor sourcing is fine if the Owner's Engineer coordinates well. In practice, this is where outages come from. The UPS vendor blames the DG. The DG vendor blames the AMF panel. The AMF panel OEM blames the cabling contractor. Each has a plausible story. Meanwhile the servers are down.

SMIPL's model eliminates this failure mode. One contract. One design review. One commissioning programme. One CAMC. When something fails, our engineer shows up — and either fixes it, or escalates to an OEM that we manage, not the client.
